The star of UNC’s 1922 football team was fullback Jack Merrit, whose tough performance on the field earned him the nickname of “the Battering Ram. Merrit, in turn, inspired UNC cheerleader Vic Huggins to organize a new mascot for the school: a live ram. The university agreed to pay $25 for a ram from Texas, and “Rameses” made his sideline debut at the UNC-VMI game on Nov. 8, 1924.

This classic Georgia Tech logo dates back to the 1960s. The athletic teams tried a variety of nicknames through the years, but multi-sport coach John Heisman (yes, that Heisman) liked the Yellow Jackets nickname in 1905, after the literal yellow jackets that Tech fans would wear to sporting events. Sure, this vintage-inspired bomber jacket is black, not yellow, but it shows off Tech pride nonetheless. Brought to you in partnership with College Vault.
